Welcome to Derrick Harris & The Eighth Note
Derrick Harris (arranger, composer, trombonist and bandleader) was born in Miami Fl. Derrick leads a modern musical quintet named the "The Eighth Note". He also performs often with the following live music ensembles; Society Funk Band, Sam River Tribute Ensemble, Ism, Gerry Williams Band (GWB) and the Orlando Jazz Orchestra (OJO) under the direction of Greg Parnell.
Derrick, began playing the trombone the age of 11, and since then has inspired by the great trombonist and composer, J.J. Johnson. Because of the time he has spent listening of many great musicians like Johnson, his love of the trombone grew exponentially. Johnson's playing influenced him so much so that Derrick began to model his playing after him. Mr Harris has formally studied music at both Valencia College and Florida Agricultural Mechanical University (FAMU). He currently lives in Orlando, FL, his home-base, because of huge varieties of performing opportunities that continue to present themselves to again and again, in his musical career.
Derrick is often called as versatile a horn player (trombone), to tour and performed all over America. The state of Florida is his territory, but you can often find him performing with his own group or as a sideman, at events and venues like; the White House, major events sponsored by Fortune 500 companies, recitals, concerts and touring all over America. The demand for his services and his over all versatility comes from his want and need to play most genres of music. Some Of the notable groups/acts that Mr Harris has performed with are; Don Reckles, George Lopez, Drumline Live (The Musical) Frankie Negron(Salsa), Tito Nuevez jr. (Salsa), THE BLUTET (Jazz), and many others. He also leads live music ensembles based on the format of the legendary group The Modern Quintet, which named "The Eighth Note." This Quintet plays some standards and many originals compositions that are written by each member.
Derrick feels he has been blessed, and wants the opportunity to share his passion and knowledge of music with everyone who comes his way. He is honored to have worked at Oak Ridge High School, Ocoee High School and Lockhart Middle as a Clinician and Staff.
Derrick has recorded on 6 albums as a sideman, and one unreleased as a co-leader. Look for more artistic output from him in the coming years. He currently resides in West Orlando with his beautiful wife and kids.
